Coalition of Gamers :: Xbox 360 -vs- PS3 :: the real story?

Saturday, June 04, 2005

Since the specs for both the Xbox 360 and Sony’s PS3 have been revealed there has been a lot of talk about which console is the more powerful game maching. A lot of media outlets have made claims that the PS3 is up to 3 times as powerful as the Xbox 360. People seem to believe those outrageous claims after seeing footage of PS3 games at this year’s E3, Killzone 2 being the most talked about of those games.

It has since been revealed, by the Killzone 2 developers, that the footage is a “representation of what we wish the game to be”. In other words, it’s NOT in-game footage and in no way represents what final PS3 graphics will look like.

Now, people at Microsoft have taken a hard look at each system’s specs and have published their own version of the story. Head over to Major Nelson’s Blog for full details regarding their findings. Their opinion may be a little biased but people outside of Microsoft, who have in-depth knowledge of how these systems work, seem to be agreeing that the two consoles are a lot closer in performance than most people would have you believe.

How the Xbox 360 affects PC gamers

I found this article very interesting... Wowsa. So the Xbox 360 finally got announced. To be honest, I'm absolutely blown away. The specs are utterly mouthwatering, and the design and some of the thought that has clearly gone into making this a desirable bit of kit is simply outstanding.Of course, whilst the console is important for its own sake, it also has profound implications for us PC enthusiasts, and that's what I'd like to talk a little about today. Xbox 360 video clips captured from Mac test machines

The clips of video games supporting Microsoft's new Xbox 360 console are running on Apple machines, Microsoft confirmed on Friday. "We purchased a number of Apple G5's because very specific hardware components of the G5 allow developers to emulate some of the technology behind future Xbox products and services," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement. "This is an interim development tool that will be replaced with a more powerful and comprehensive solution later." The new console from Microsoft is based on a similar IBM PowerPC architecture used in Apple computers--the Xbox 360 uses three 3.2GHz symmetrical cores. Read Full Story

The Xbox 360 Visual Experience - Xbox 360 GPU Details

At a brief press conference during E3 2005 titled "The Xbox 360 Visual Experience," ATI took the opportunity to dish out a few more details about the graphics chip developed for Microsoft's new console. The company claimed it took about two years to design the chip, and that they started with "a clean sheet of paper," devoting themselves to creating the ideal console graphics chip without any considerations for turning this into a PC architecture or restricting themselves to a particular API. The basic architecture looks like this: Read Full story

Inside the Xbox 360 - 6 part series

When word first got out that Microsoft was planning to get into the game console business, I was skeptical. First, I was skeptical that the rumors were true, and when they turned to be true I was skeptical that the console would have any impact on the market. Today, as an Xbox owner myself, I'm glad to say I was wrong. Microsoft was able to leverage their software expertise and deep pockets to rapidly develop a console that didn't just have an impact on the console market, but went from zero to second place in terms of market share.
